Canvas for Faculty

Canvas

Canvas is a web-based learning management system, or LMS. It is used by learning institutions, educators, and students to access and manage online course learning materials and communicate about skill development and learning achievement. Canvas includes a variety of customizable course creation and management tools, course and user analytics and statistics, and internal communication tools.

Where to Start

1.) If you are new faculty and are beginning to teach online, or have been using Canvas in the past and would like a refresher, we recommend you begin by scheduling a meeting with e-Learning so that we can assess your needs and prepare the proper level of training.

2.) Request the creation of a sandbox, a course space in Canvas with no students, so that you can begin to explore and practice in Canvas.

3.) Sign up for our asynchronous Canvas course.

Resources

Canvas was released in 2008 and since that time has been the fastest- growing LMS available. Because of this there is an abundance of resources available for Canvas.

The Canvas Instructor Guide is available on the Instructure (The creators of Canvas) website.

The Canvas LMS YouTube page is a great resource with videos on a variety of topics.

Training

Canvas training is available on-demand and through regularly scheduled online and face-to-face sessions. In addition in 2022 a Canvas Certification course will be available to faculty and staff to improve their Canvas skills.

Asynchronous Canvas Course

If you would like to take an asynchronous Canvas course to improve your skills, please contact the e-Learning department and we can add you to the course.

Canvas Mobile App

A mobile app for Canvas instructors is also available for use. Instructions for downloading and using can be found here:
